The Center's Policy Briefs are documents which
outline the rationale for choosing a particular policy alternative
or course of action in a current policy debate. The purpose
of the policy briefs is to provide empirical data to inform
policy makers at all levels (e.g., institutional, state, and
federal) of urgent and current problems that affect the African
American community. Ultimately, these policy briefs will lead
to the adoption of the preferred alternative or course of
action outlined, and therefore serve as an impetus for action.
All proposals and manuscripts are submitted via the online
submission system . Proposals for the Policy Briefs
can be submitted at anytime. Proposals reviewed in the
order in which they were received.
Preparation of the Proposal
Each proposal should be in Microsoft Word format and no
longer than 5 double space pages. The proposal should include:
objectives and purposes; perspective(s) or theoretical framework;
methods, techniques, or modes of inquiry; data sources and
evidence; and
practical or scientific importance of the study. In addition,
all proposals should include name(s) of each author,
university affiliation, phone number and e-mail address.
Peer Review Process
Proposals will be acknowledged by the CAARP staff upon
receipt. After an internal editorial review, proposals will
be forwarded anonymously to at least two external reviewers.
The review process will take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks.
Once the proposal has been reviewed, that author(s) will
be notified about the status of the proposal. Approval of
the proposal is not a commitment to publish. The completed
manuscript will also undergo review. The review process
will take anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months.
Preparation of Manuscript
A manuscript submitted as a Policy Brief should
be a Microsoft Word file. Manuscripts should be formatted
into a 8 ½ x 11 document with one inch margins, should
be Times New Roman 12 point typeface, and should not be
more than 75 double-spaced pages (including references).
The submission should conform to the Publications Manual
of the American Psychological Association (APA) (5th edition).
Manuscripts accepted for publication are subject to
copyediting. Manuscript submission indicates the author's
commitment to publish a Policy Brief and to give
the PB first publication rights.
Title Page: The title page should contain the article
name, authors' names and complete affiliations, and the
address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail
address, telephone, and fax numbers).
Abstract: A descriptive abstract of no more than
100 double-spaced words should be included in the manuscript.
Copyright
It is a condition of publication that author(s) vest copyright
of their manuscripts, including abstracts, to The Center
for African American Research and Policy (CAARP). Authors
may use the manuscript elsewhere after publication without
prior permission from CAARP, provided that acknowledgment
is given to PB as the original source.
